On January 10, candidates in the 2020 primary City elections reported having raised campaign contributions exceeding $4.5 million and spent nearly $2.5 million. Most of the campaign contributions are attributed to candidates in the races in Council Districts (CD) 4, 10, and 14. Candidates in the CD 4 race reported over $1.4 million in contributions, candidates in the CD 10 race reported over $900,000, and candidates in the CD 14 race reported nearly $1.1 million.

The City’s matching funds program provides qualified City candidates with public money to help them wage their campaigns. To date, $400,000 in matching funds has been paid to candidates in the CD 4 race, the only race in which candidates have received matching funds.

Candidates in the 2020 primary elections for Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education (LAUSD) reported having raised nearly $500,000 and spent over $220,000. Most of the campaign contributions are attributed to candidates in the District 3 and District 7 races. Candidates in the District 3 race reported over $100,000 in contributions, and candidates in the District 7 race reported nearly $250,000.

In addition to candidate spending, entities and individuals who independently spend money in an attempt to influence elections must also report their activity. Most independent expenditures occur in the four to six weeks prior to an election. However, independent expenditures in the 2020 LAUSD primary elections have already reached nearly $588,000. Independent expenditures in the City elections total just $5,000.

The next filing deadline for candidates in the 2020 primary City and LAUSD elections is January 23, covering activity from January 1 through January 18. The primary elections will be held on March 3, 2020; and general elections, if necessary, will be held on November 3, 2020.

Additional information about the candidates, independent spending, and political communications is available on the Election Totals page.  Campaign activity and political communications may also be searched on the Public Data Portal.
