Ralph David Fertig (May 2012 - Present)

     Ralph David Fertig has fought for social justice as a federal administrative judge, civil rights lawyer, social worker, author, and sociologist. He is a professor at the USC School of Social Work, where he has taught social welfare policy and social work & law since 2003.

     In addition to his many teaching posts, Fertig was executive director of the Greater Los Angeles Community Action Agency, where he managed programs directed toward the improvement of life and better opportunities for low-income residents and communities; executive director of the Metropolitan Washington Planning & Housing Association; and the Washington Welfare Association. In the 1960s, he was part of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, a freedom rider and an activist for a variety of human rights groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.

     Presently, he serves as president of the Humanitarian Law Project/International Educational Development, a non-governmental organization with consultative status to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Additionally, he sits on the executive board of the Freedom Riders Coordinating Committee and is a member of Americans for Peace Now.

     Fertig received a Juris Doctor from UCLA, was a candidate for a Ph.D in Social Planning from the UCLA and was a candidate for a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Fertig received a Masters degree in Sociology from Columbia University and a Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts and Science from the University of Chicago.

     Fertig was appointed by City Controller Wendy Greuel to complete a term originally filled by Nedra Jenkins. His current term will end on June 30, 2013, and he will be eligible at that time for reappointment to a full five-year term.
